I am a bit of an anorak when it comes to family history...or genealogy as us enthusiasts like to call it. It is a passion of mine, and something I try to fit in... in between work, home, family life, and of course watching the super Donny Rovers. I like to think I've secured my stripes after six years of spending numerous hours visiting family history centres, libraries, cemeteries, family history fairs, archive departments, and conducting hours of online research. It's not something you'd expect to see on a football related board.... but I am the admin....and I can do what I want... Joking apart, if there is anyone out there who is remotely interested in family history....it'll be great to hear from you.

The last 13 years have seen my kids have spending all my money...apart from that, I don't really know anything about my family history.

You have money?
My wife's great-grandfather played in goal for Donny in the late 1800s. They used to have to pick him up from a tavern in Hyde Park..and sober him before the game. That is a true story. He also played for Tottenham, Arsenal, and Croydon.

You'll be surprised what family history uncovers.
As for money..... it's never your own is it when you have kids. An idea is to encourage them to follow your hobbies. Take them to Foo Fighters concerts... Fleetwood Mac concerts.....or to watch Rotherham United....... In fact...scrap the Rotherham United one because you might get into trouble for child emotional abuse.

My daughter already goes to see foo fighters with me, and we took my son to see Kaiser Chiefs...and we all had ST's for RUFC last year. You could be right about the emotional abuse...my lass cried when she thought RUFC was to be no more. In fact...as i'm typing...my daughter is blasting Pretender by the Foo Fighters through my ceiling on her electric guitar...it sounds fab...make of that what you will. lol ;D youtube.com/watch?v=DKhnmUdmz74

I would cry if I was a Rotherham United supporter...full stop ;D Family HistoryFor those thinking about researching their family history, I'd initially recommend two internet sites.... both are free and both offer a huge collection of data. The first is the FreeBMD site. Ninety percent of Births, Marriages, and Deaths registered between the years 1837-1910... you will find on this site. The information given is limited...but it is a good starting off point. The second site is run by the 'Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' (Mormons), and be found here. It is, by far, the largest 'free' family history research site on the web. You also might like to browse the GENUKI (Genealogy United Kingdom and Ireland) site. It offers good advice, but at times can be confusing to negotiate your way through the links.

it's only confusing if you're a Doncaster Rovers fan, scriptman.

I've been doing my Famly Tree for about 2 years now. I'm a "free" member on Genes Reunited and not long after I started putting my tree on there (with huge amounts of help from my cousin) I was contacted by my Dad's cousin's daughter, who I had not seen for about 30 years. This was swiftly followed by a contact from my mum's cousin's daughter, who I had not seen for over 40 years. In my "investigations" I found out my "paternal" side from my Great Grandfather back to my Great x 4 Grandfather all came from the Barnsley area. Great x 4 Grandad born in Silkstone Great x 3 born in Darfield Great x 2 born in Ardsley Great x 1 born in Worsborough Dale I think I am turning/have turned into a bit of an anorak myself

wortleygirl I don't know if you are aware, but the Latter Day Saints (LDS) have a family history archive centre in the basement of their church in Sheffield. .....which will cover the Barnsley area. They provide a comprehensive amount of info....above the normal copies of parish registers etc. You don't have to be a Mormon to use the facilities....I'm not. In fact the only time I go to church is for christenings, marriages, and funerals. They are extremely helpful..and make you feel very welcome. I'll pm you the address and phone number if you are interested. My family on my paternal side originate from Leeds...so I've spent some time in the local history centre at Leeds Central Library..and the local history archive building at Sheepscar. My wife's family, on her maternal side, I've been able to go back to the early 1600s...... but it gets difficult because the entries on the parish registers are faded and incomprehensible....not least because they are entered in French, Galician, Latin etc.... depending on the clergy's native tongue...... and these are areas in Derbyshire. So for William.... you might have Guillaume or Gillum, ... for James... Xaime , Giacomo, or Jacques.......... If someone was called James Williams ..... you'd see something like Xaime Guillaumin... I'm not sure what you have access to.....but if I can help, I have full access to Census collections from 1841 to 1901..... so if there's anything you'd like looking up just give us a shout.

Cheers Scriptman. I am very fortunate 'cos my 2nd cousin (my mum's cousin's daughter) has given me access to her Ancestry Account, so I can get all the census files (Scotland as well). Also my other 2nd cousin (on dad's side) had already done a huge amount of work which she passed onto me. I don't know if you have these sites, but as you have family from Leeds, you might find these interesting www.leodis.net/default.aspxThis is an archive of thousands of photos from Leeds and surrounding areas from the present day, going back years. www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/This is the Yorkshire bit of FreeBMD. It's been very useful when I've wanted to get copies of certificates from Leeds Registry Office.

I have come across those sites. I actually found a photo of the house in Stanningley my g-grandfather and g-grandmother lived in on the leodis site. There used to be a site called Leeds Indexes that provided good info....but when it joined Yorkshire Indexes it started to charge for some of the services. I don't know about you, but it's cost me a few bob on the genealogy sites..... the wife goes ballistic when the bank-statements arrive. I have membership to Ancestry....... but there's also sites like www.familyhistoryonline.net who provide good info...especially regarding the burial indx.....but it costs...and the amount soon builds up.
