I once asked a class of mature students what their favourite era was with regards to music.....and of course I was returned with different answers. The one thing that struck me however, was that there seemed to be a relationship between the 'choice of era' and events in their lives. They might say I like the 1970s because that is when I met my husband...or I liked the early 1980s because I was a student at University. I personally loved the 1970s, but then I didn't have all the responsibility and worry I have now..... but was the 1970s better for music than say the 1950s? My parents don't think so and they lived through both decades. I find myself repeatedly reaching for a Lighthouse Family or Crowded House CD...despite having well over a hundred related 1970s music CDs. ...why is this? Do I really prefer 1990s music? I'm often quoted as saying that I can't stand recent music...but I feel the last three songs from Take That, the song 'Chasing Pavements' (I'm not sure who sings it), and Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black' are outstanding.....and there's a few more besides I find really good.....'Crazy', 'Leave Right Now'.... There's been good and bad in most eras of music.....but I think it's difficult to say what era produced the highest concentration of quality music....without being influenced by external circumstances.

Some of the tunes wont ever go down in history but they mean something to me and thats what music is all about. annimallittle I was just reading your post again, and what sprung to mind was the quote by Pete Postlethwaite's in 'Brassed Off' (I'm sure you've seen it). I can't remember how it went exactly...but something on the lines of... 'Let them close the pit ..we've still got the band, and it's music what counts' . Absolutely brilliant.

I like some music from every decade...but it has to be the 70's for me. Not because of any events, but because I like Progressive Rock, Disco and Glam Rock. The 80's were CRAP!!!!!!!!!!! But then the 90's started to see back to basic good rock music; starting with Nirvana, then Foo Fighters. Now in the 21st century, we not only have Foo Fighters, but we also have Muse, Travis, Radiohead and many other great contemporary Rock Bands. I love this song by Radiohead. (think was in 90's) See Link youtube.com/watch?v=nxpblnsJEWM

Top song that foo..... brilliant.
Mind, when I hear it kinda strikes a chord on the account it's what women say to me when I splash on a dab of Brut and wear my white suit and medallion....... and it's usually preceded by the words 'Get lost....'

What do you think of these? I love this song! It never really ignited any kind of spark for me foo..... I can see why you like it though... very Foo Fighters(esque) I was playing a tape today...one of the Now Music ones from the early 90s... I came across a couple of songs by Beverley Craven and Julian Lennon I really like. Mind you, Beverley Craven could sing like screeching cat and I'd still take take great pleasure watching her sing..... not that I'm a shallow chap you must understand

It looks like I am a bit younger than you guys, I was a child of the 80's so unsurprisingly, that era of music had a big influence on my taste with artists such as Duran Duran, U2, Eurythmics and Depeche Mode amongst my favorites.
Now I am older and hopefully wiser, I agree with you Foo about there being good music from each decade. It wasn't until he passed away that I becamae a massive fan of Freddie Mercury and Queen, they produced some brilliant songs. I couldn't pick out an out and out favorite song of mine, there are too many to choose from.

I've had a taste of the 1960s to the present day....and without of a shadow of doubt Freddie Mercury (in my opinion) was the best showman/singer bar none..... and I've seen Freddie and the Dreamers lol. You are right about choosing the best Queen song. I initially thought of 'You're my Best Friend'.....but then there's 'We are the Champions' and 'Don't Stop Me Now' I think I'd have to go for We are the Champions. Every time I hear that song, it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

Best era? Early 80s easy, before the bloody Stock/Aitken/Waterman pap of the mid-late 80s.
Followed by the 70s, and the 60s.

Best era? Early 80s easy, before the bloody Stock/Aitken/Waterman pap of the mid-late 80s. I hold them responsible for destroying my interest in the music charts....and making a mockery of the music charts in general. I could tolerate Bruce Willis singing 'Under the Boardwalk', and The Firm with 'Star Trekin'... but when it come to Sinita, Sonia, Kylie, Jason Donovan etc.... it was a total put off. I've always maintained Kylie is nothing more than a very average singer at best.... and Jason Donovan is flat.

70's best for rock music, 80's still had some decent rock - def lep, motorhead but it was drven underground by commercial drivel. its slightly embarrasing now seeing young kids wearing glitter ac/dc t shirts

I think Pete Waterman is a totally over rated piece of nothing!!
The music scene had changed at the end of the 80s, and I agree that it was much better before he came along. To say Kylie is over rated is controversial with most people (not me), but to say the same about Jason is accepted by the majority. Id like to know why she is thought of as being such a brilliant singer when she is no better than most of her rivals.

acido- Have you ever heard Kylie Minogue sing without the help of electronic voice modification or that incessant music beat in the background? She was on Jools Holland and any high note or powerful note was a screech... I can't sing a note in tune, so I should be the last one to criticise.....but I do love music and since 1988 I think the quality of music on mainstream radio or TV has gone downhill. I'm not saying music per se has gone downhill because there are great musicians about.. but I do think nowadays you need to make a concerted effort to find it.
roverdude- The 70s were undoubtedly the best era for rock. What I used to enjoy doing was going back to the roots of groups, particularly 70s rock bands, and it's amazing what you learn. Can you recall this song from 1978:
It was by a group called Renaissance... and the guys who originally formed this group were Keith Relf and Jim McCarty. In the 1960s these chaps were in a group called the Yardbirds... whose members featured, amongst others, Jeff Beck (Hi Ho Silver Lining), Eric Clapton, and none other than Jimmy Page. Clapton, Beck, Relf and McCarty left to form different groups.....and Beck re-branded the Yardbirds as Led Zeppelin. Now how far removed is Renaissance from Led Zeppelin in terms of music?

I think it's fascinating roverdude. What it does show is that at one time groups and singers had to earn their stripes. Nowadays they just get a group of pretty boys, put them in a studio and make them sound good...

You can hear/see the 70's rock influence in THIS contemporary band...so all is not lost...a very talented band. They split, but i've heard they're getting back together. I saw them at the Hallam Arena...BRILLIANT just about sums them up. THE DARKNESS
