With the juices flowing i thought what the hell,i'm off to Anfield,i rang Tina and asked if the lads were interested in going over to Liverpool this afternoon with me for the match,"well i will ask but you know how things are at the moment" she said, the tone in her voice told me this was a negative,"Nathan's says he's going to Meadowhall with his girlfriend",no suprise there really,Steve Parkin and Paul Hart combined with the dire football of league 1 had dampened the flames on this 17 years old's support for the red cause ages ago,and in any case he'd discovered girls, music and beer and that was no contest,"Aidan says he's playing on his xbox and he's got better things to do than trail 100 miles to watch Barnsley get slaughtered","fair enough" i replied, and then she hit me with it,"nice to see some things never change, your life's suppose to be falling apart and yet you can shoot over to Liverpool at the drop of a hat to watch that stupid team of yours, dont suppose you have thought about how the hell i am suppose to pay the mortgage and get Aidan to school this week do you !!!"delivered with all the bluntness you would expect from a lass born into a mining family and brought up on a Rossington council estate,i let it go over my head, pointless even to argue and i had become tired of all this crap,i said i would sort something out and would be in touch tomorrow with the money to help her out.
I picked up the phone again and rang a tout who i know well from my England away days,he then rang one of his many contacts and arranged for me to meet a guy outside the Arkle pub near to Anfield at 2pm,the price would be negotiable.
I nipped over to the road to the cafe and ordered myself a full english, and at miday i set off to Anfield, deep in thought and wondering how the hell i was going to get my lads back in my life and where the money was coming from to help Tina out, perhaps this was not the greatest idea in the world and i knew it was going to be expensive, but in true selfish footie fan style i drove on regardless.
I arrived in Liverpool at around 1.30pm and parked the car on a bit of waste ground about 10 minutes walk away from Anfield,i know the area fairly well and this was the third occasion i had seen us at this famous old ground, its a rough, tough, dodgy area is Anfield but on match days its different, and with the sun shining and a big game atmosphere in the air i walked confidently towards the Arkle pub to meet my contact.
He wanted 75 quid for a seat in the Centenary Stand,i was hoping to be with the 6000 reds behind the goal at the Anfield Road End,"not a prayer he said, cant do it mate, its in with the scouser's or you turn right round and head back to yorkshire",i thought about it and he knew only too well i had not travelled over to turn right round and go home,"50 quid i said and thats all i have got on me","60 quid and i will shake your hand",i gave him the money and he handed over the ticket........deal done......and with that i headed towards the turnstiles.
