After sinking a few beers in the city centre the five of us jumped in a cab and headed for Pier 7 a pub right next to Salford Quays and a 10 minute walk from Old Trafford, inside our two mates from our local were waiting and had already lined the beers up.
Marshy and Sandy have followed Man Utd since we were all at school together in the 70's,they have held season tickets since the early 80's and have followed the Red Devils all over England and Europe, they have our complete respect and have been through the dark days and paid their due's,the success Fergie had brought them was not an issue with us and they have had to endure endless nights of piss-taking over the years from us when they could not even get close to winning the league for 20 odd years.
Marshy made straight for my old man and they were quickly into the pre-match banter, the 7-0 hiding we had back in October was never ever going to be forgotten with these two and its just something we all had to take on the chin.
The pub was heaving with both supporters and made for a great atmosphere that sunday afternoon, plenty of good natured banter and piss - taking and finished with the whole pub singing " we all hate Leeds scum ",at 3.30 we supped up and the 7 of us made our way to the Theatre Of Dreams.
Its only when you get close to Old Trafford do you realise just how big this club is and its an inspiring sight and the place just ooze's money and the BIG TIME,restaurant's like club international, club europa, the united steakhouse all packed full of pre-match diners greet you as make your way onto the concourse which surrounds Old Trafford, even the raggy arsed street hawkers on Busby Way have purpose built market stalls to sell their gear from, the place just buzzes with the amount of people who descend on this stadium every fortnight from every corner of the country ...like them or loath them ....you have to take your hat off to the people who built this club into one of the biggest in the world.
We shook hands with Marshy and Sandy and they headed for the Stretford End,we arranged a drink tonight with them in our local to chew the fat on todays game.
We made our way inside Old Trafford, through the turnstile's and up the steps and out onto one of the worlds great sporting arena's,Old Trafford does take your breath away like no other stadium in this country can,and with 9,000 tykes sweeping all the way around K stand we had the atmosphere to match the surroundings, the noise was incredible and everyone was up for this one,its occasions like these that really make the bad times seem worthwhile, here we were little old Barnsley,FA cup 5th round day,in front of 55,000 fans at one of the worlds great stadiums, live on national television and competing against a club in the same league as we were .....could life get any better .....well yes actually it could .......cue John Hendrie.
