Marshy and Sandy had managed to get tickets for the replay and they had been very fortunate to do so,the system Man Utd employed at that time to distribute tickets involved a lottery and they had come up trumps,we were well pleased for them and arrangements were made for us all to put holidays in and make a day of it.
Myself,Big Bri,Dave The Rave,Mick,Marshy and Sandy were in the Pockets snooker club on Pontefract Road at 1pm that afternoon and we were all determined to have a good day, after a few games of continental snooker we all headed into town for a few jars prior to the 8pm kick off.
The atmosphere was really building in town and there were plenty of lads in the pubs all intent on having a good drink and a bit of craic before the match, that was until someone spotted Marshy's Red Devil lapel badge in the Chennels bar and started playing the big man and mouthing off, what he did not know was that 4 of us were tykes and if he had a problem with our 2 mates he then also had a problem with us,he retracted his opening line of " what the f**k are you Munich bastards doing in here " when Big Bri told him he had two ways of leaving the pub " through the door right now " or " through the window " even sooner,he decided wisely on the 1st option,Bri would have done it without even thinking about it.
We met the old man in O'Neils bar at 7pm and after a couple more pints the 7 of us made our way up the hill to Oakwell, the atmosphere was tremendous and there was a real buzz in the air as we made our way towards Grove Street,Oakwell on FA cup night under the lights is always special, put Man Utd into the equation as well and you have the recipe for Oakwell to be at its finest.
The match got under-way and we were kicking towards the kop end in the first half,we started very brightly again and were soon one up under controversial circumstances,Darren Barnard played John Hendrie in who was at least 3 yards offside, the Man Utd defence just stood and watched confident that the flag would soon be raised,it never came and Super John finished in emphatic style,it was bizzare to say the least, and Fergie was blowing a gasket on the sidelines, the referee Riley had just evened the score up from Old Trafford ......justice served i thought.
Man Utd were fired up now and started to dictate the game,Beckham and Butt were pulling the strings in midfield and Cole and Sheringham were causing us all sorts of problems,Beckham was put through one on one and slid the ball under Watson only to see it hit the inside of the post, roll all the way along the line and back into Watson's arms, tough break that Becks ....but nice try all the same.
Just before halftime we won a free kick out on the left touchline,Redders played a quality ball into the mix and first to it was Scott Jones who glided it past Schmeichel and we were 2 to the good,Oakwell went ballistic and Man Utd were rattled,i decided not to phone Marshy on my mobile this time,we may have been 2-0 up at half time but i had the feeling the second half was going to be a real struggle for us and the game was far from over.
